Chapter 1 · Neuroinflammation

Your brain has its own immune system. With age, it can get stuck "on".

Inflammation is your body's alarm. A short burst heals a wound or fights an infection, then switches off. The problem is low-grade inflammation that never fully switches off, which becomes more common as we age. Scientists call it "inflammaging".

Your brain is protected by its own immune cells, called microglia. When inflammation signals keep arriving from the rest of the body, microglia can stay switched on. How a weak gut lining can light a fire in the brain.

Your gut lining is a single layer of cells, sealed together by proteins called tight junctions. When it weakens, fragments of bacteria slip into the blood and set off inflammation that can reach all the way to the brain.

Age itself

Gut bacteria become less diverse as we get older, especially the protective Bifidobacteria.

Alzheimer's disease

  • Studies have found differences in the gut bacteria of people with Alzheimer's compared with people without it.
  • Chronic neuroinflammation, driven partly by signals from the body, is a central theme in current Alzheimer's research.
  • In a 12-week trial, a probiotic trio of L. acidophilus, B. longum and B. bifidum improved cognitive test outcomes in Alzheimer's patients, when given together with selenium.
Parkinson's disease

A condition that may involve the gut early

  • Constipation is common in Parkinson's and often appears years before movement symptoms.
  • Researchers have found gut microbiome differences in people with Parkinson's, and study whether some changes start in the gut.

Can MindFlora treat or prevent Alzheimer's or Parkinson's?

No. MindFlora is a nutritional supplement that supports gut and brain health. It does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Research on the gut–brain axis in these conditions is promising but still early. Anyone with these conditions should follow their neurologist's treatment plan.

My parent takes medicines for BP, diabetes or a neurological condition. Can they take it?

Probiotics are generally well tolerated, but please check with their doctor first, especially for anyone on several medicines. Never stop or change a prescribed medicine.

Who should not take it without medical advice?

People with a seriously weakened immune system, those who are critically ill or recently had major surgery, and anyone with a central line or catheter should only take probiotics under a doctor's supervision.

How long before I notice anything?
